Competing before coming out as transgender, Hubbard set New Zealand junior records in 1998 in the newly established M105+ division with snatch 135 kg, clean & jerk 170 kg, total 300 kg.
At the 2017 Australian International & Australian Open in Melbourne, she competed at the heaviest 90 kg+ category, winning the gold medal with a 123 kg snatch and 145 kg clean & jerk, for a total of 268 kg at a bodyweight of 131.83 kg.
In 2020, she won the gold medal in the women's +87 kg event at the Roma 2020 World Cup in Rome, Italy.

S.F.'s Kuinini這個報導說明東加選手的參賽資格本來被哈柏德擠下去了(因為大洋洲的區域賽事)，後來右翼媒體激烈報導此事以後，東加選手獲得了額外的參賽機會。我查到的兩份報導都偏左派，表示很不認同右派炒作東加選手失去參賽資格。
嗯……原來在大洋洲真的早就爭論好久了，只是沒到奧運其他國家沒有注意到。

Joanna Harper is a competitive runner, scientist, transgender woman and medical physicist at the Providence Portland Medical Center who advised the IOC. She argues that the use of estrogen supplements and testosterone blockers (or physical castration via sex reassignment surgery) cause a decrease in muscle mass and oxygen-carrying red blood cells,
and that this leads to a decrease in strength, speed, and endurance.
According to Harper, every athlete has advantages and disadvantages. The greater height that a transgender woman may have gained before transitioning may be an advantage on the basketball court but it is likely to be disadvantageous to a gymnast.

she published the first study of transgender athletes' performances, finding that transgender women who received treatment to lower their testosterone levels did no better in a variety of races against female peers than they had previously done against male runners.
Although Harper's study included only a few transgender women, Eric Vilain of The George Washington University in Washington, D.C., a geneticist who specializes in gender-based biology, calls it "groundbreaking."
That work helped make Harper an unpaid adviser for sporting bodies, such as the International Olympic Committee (IOC), that are wrestling with transgender issues and other matters of gender.
Although Harper has just a master's degree, she is helping spearhead several studies documenting how the physiology and performance of transgender athletes change as they make their transition.
Harper may not have the traditional pedigree of a scientist, Vilain says, but "her approach is highly respected."
