As the women stood on the opposite side of the road, Smith says that one “flamboyantly dressed man” holding a Pride flag approached them. He proceeded to harass the women by attempting to cover their signs with his banner.
As he did so, another man walked over holding a rainbow sign that read, “No place for hate.” At this point, Smith says, he began pursuing her and “put [his sign] in my face.”
“I felt fear… these were two big men,” Smith said. Despite her anxiety, she reportedly told the trans activist: “Oh, no, you are not doing this to me. Get out of my face.” She then attempted to push his sign away from her.
“In that instant, his fist exploded into my face so fast. I felt myself flying and falling… I hit the sidewalk and froze.”
Despite this, the man was not detained. Law enforcement apprehended the man, took his information, and according to Smith, filed a restraining order. She has said that she intends to pursue charges against him, and that a court date has been set for December 19.
Relaying further details of her experience to popular YouTuber and English women’s rights activist Kellie-Jay Keen, Smith explained that she had heard from a Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) officer that the man who assaulted her said he had done so because he felt “vulnerable.”
