Does anyone have any idea on when the PBR materials are supposed to hit SL?

If its going to be any time soon, I don't want to go into a frenzy of making stuff to look good now, only to have to redo them all.

It's very soon. They are encouraging people to log in to the beta grid to test out things, so they can get this 100%* right. There's a project viewer, and some regions dedicated to it on the beta grid. Let me try to find a blog post...

NeoBokrug: Awesome, thanks! I was looking at the wiki, but it didn't seem to say when [but then I'm trying to do about 50 things at once right now]

Max had a general PDF about pbr, too, within the last few days.

LL will never say "when". But it's close enough to be a public beta, and the general pace about the whole project has been fast.

thaumata: I'll look at it, though I'm used to working with pbr, it looks like they aren't giving us -all- the materials yet, so maybe that will give me a better idea on what I can do with it [I do a lot with things like gems, so..... ]

NeoBokrug: Then I'll either wait, or work on some things to release once it goes live.

But the Firestorm guys also need to add it to their client. And for that it needs to be stable enough and not cause too many issues.

There’s also going to be a fail safe of applying a baked texture to the mesh first before applying the PBR material, so that anyone with an older viewer sees it as intended, so I wouldn’t worry too much, as we’ll have an overlap period of having to do both to some degree.

I like how it works on metallic things [I had my jack o'lantern from last HocusPocus to test on], but I want to see how it will work on glass and such.... now my eyes are recovered from eye doctor, I'll see how it does.

Welp, apparently you can't even make a pbr texture have transparency O.o
