Oh destiny of Borges ---

to have traversed the various seas of the world

or the same solitary sea under various names,

to have been a part of Edinburgh, Zurich, the two Cordobas,

Colombia, and Texas,

咦！詩興在晚上發？不是一向在早晨？

to have come back across generations

to the ancient lands of his forebears,

to Andalucia, to Portugal, to those shires

where Saxon fought with Dane, mingling bloods,

to have wandered the red and peaceful maze of London,

to have grown old in so many mirrors,

to have tried in vain to catch the marble eyes of the statues,

to have studied lithographs, encyclopedias, atlases,

to have witnessed the things that all men witness---

death, the weight of dawn, the endless plain

and the intricacy of stars,

and to have seen nothing, or almost nothing

but the face of a girl in Buenos Aires,

a face that does not want to be remembered.

Oh destiny of Borges, perhaps no stranger than yours.
