What I find curious is why iPad advocates buy an iPad ($500), external peripherals like keybrd (>$50) to give the iPad netbook functionality

I've always thought that was curious as well. Feeling less portable is one reason I haven't made that purchase myself.

Saint Nick that's what drives me crazy. I have to have a keyboard but it kills me to think of buying an iPad then having to invest...

iPads & their owners defy logic. I don't think you buy them for logical reasons.
nkrahn

mguhlin: I avoided the keyboard purchase by justifying that if I need to type that bad I can use my full laptop.

vdub144: I use mine in my classroom as a doc camera, interactive whiteboard/slate, etc. I'm not sure I would own one if I wasn't in educ.

vdub144 the problem is iPads are getting purchased by school districts and device lifetime is...2 years? constant spending on apps?

are you talking about iPad vs a laptop? or iPad vs another tablet? My students love their laptops and use them daily. They use my iPad

most other tablets are smaller and even more expensive from what I've seen. But as long as my students need a word processor, I'd hate to

Last ios update was 4.7.1 or something like that. I've had 2 dozen Apple products all dead by support in the past 20 years.

I have WYSE thin clients at school. I hate them. Fine for MS Word & basic tasks, but take a pounding because users don't understand they are

Regular computers. I've walked this road before.

I would put the realistic life between 2-4 years. We use our computers at school on a 5 year replacement cycle and even when babied
nkrahn

you can really tell the ones that are ready to be replaced. And those are the desktops. The laptops are brutal by year 5.

Imagine your satisfaction with an original iPhone (not even 5 years old yet those are only 4) compared to an iPhone4.

I love my Macbook...it can run Mac, Windows and Linux OSs, and comes with a built-in keyboard. Tabletsincluding iPadlack the flexibility

We jump too quickly for the fancy technologies in schools, the greatest apps, web tools...and, in the end, they are just fads that siphon $$

That is the "who makes the decision" debate. This is where teachers say how much they hate the tech guy.

vdub144 I've argued that perspective as well...get the tech you need to teach. I just haven't seen systemic adoption of ANY...

We are FINALLY trying a full systematic adoption with tablets. Full round table discussions about what teachers need facilitated through

The need for the discussions has been there but really came about with a discussion about tablet integration.

We already have staff that have brought in their own tablets expecting them to replace their provided computers which isn't realistic.

has there ever been a more polarizing device than the iPad? Truly, it is like any other tool. When used for the right purpose, it shines.

And, it also has its limitations.

Heres where I get in trouble. Apple is a polarizing company. They don't invent, they purchase & lock down technology so that other companies

Can't use it. Very aggressive lawyers & legal dept. The few things they indeed do very well take much longer for overall adoption because

Apple handled them first. And most things they only do "well" that other less expensive & more flexible devices do better.

This is an interesting discussion. I have 6 laptops and 8 iPads in my classroom. I am frequently frustrated by the limitations of the iPads

So many things I like to do with kids, Vokis, Glogster, BitStrips, cannot be done on the iPad, but my principal is big fan so all our money

is going towards the iPads. As my laptops die, I guess my projects will too. It's so short sighted.
