yeah, it's not. i saw reports they're turning away air traffic, too.
  • the kingslayer
I heard the same about the air traffic, yeah
  • the kingslayer
sounds like phones and electricity are down at least in some places, too.
  • cpt prfecthair
anonymous is already working to try to hook people up with other means for getting information out
  • cpt prfecthair
and i've heard cell operation is down in some areas too :/
  • Chibi
    O_o
  • tronja307020
Syria's the one that's got the covil war going right now,'right?
  • the kingslayer
also, yes, they are indeed fighting a civil war rn.
  • Old Sport
and the rebels had started taking a good amount of ground lately
  • cpt prfecthair
and re: the airport, it's not just that they're turning away flights
  • cpt prfecthair
they are ordering everyone out of their airspace
  • cpt prfecthair
or at least some reports are saying, i'm trying to get major news outlet confirmation
  • goth xena
    i can't find fuckall
  • namorita
    Nothing all that recent, though.
  • cpt prfecthair
okay i see reports that there was military action near the damascus airport that led to the airport closing, but i can't confirm they're outright turning air traffic out of their national air space
  • cpt prfecthair
and commercial air traffic has been halted according to this
  • G O N E
oh dear goodness, that can't be good at all.....
  • fannyrumpled
dammit why do I have class, I want to put on Al Jazeera
  • (=゚ω゚)ノ
yeah things have been horrendous there already, i saw a photo slideshow a couple of weeks ago that was just terrible for the amount of devastation
  • ♠ primadonna ♠
    They are trying to cut out any way that the rebels have to communicate and organize. ;;
  • tronja307020
This is so scary and sad. I'm trying to remember, the govt in Syria was the one that was shooting civillians, right?
  • tronja307020
    Like...I think I saw a news report a while back where young girls were getting gunned down and shit...;_;
  • Fʎrefly
Yeah I've heard if you dont have a generator or a satellite connection you can't get anything. It's just gone like they've gone and physically disconnected all the telecomm stuff
  • Fʎrefly
(generator also relevant to general electricity outages)
  • pepper spray
Wow. Even the Syrian government's admitting they don't have much time left
  • pepper spray
This is going to get worse before it gets better
  • effef
they probably disconnected the main line cables
  • effef
whatever internet syria had was piped from the outside, so they disconnected it
  • (=゚ω゚)ノ
the syrian government has been bombing civilians pretty indiscriminately yeah
  • tronja307020
This hurts to watch unfold, God.
  • Fʎrefly
and they know if they silence the population like this they can get all KINDS of stuff done during the blackout
  • SMILE JUNKIE
the thing with the shooting of civilians, this all started with the Arab Spring. There have been a large number of defects from the military due to the fact that they have been told to shoot indiscriminately
  • SMILE JUNKIE
the military has also done things like take children and people they have arrested and used them as shields--so rumors from the rebels has stated
  • SMILE JUNKIE
that's not including the interrogations or the clear signs of torture that some bodies are reported as having
  • SMILE JUNKIE
however, everyone ALSO has to take into account that this is what we are hearing from the rebels and Syria DID NOT let foreign journalists in
  • SMILE JUNKIE
a lot of journalists have actually had to sneak their way in to get any sort of scoop on these events as they have unfolded for the past 1 1/2 year
  • SMILE JUNKIE
one woman had an Iranian passport, but she was also an American citizen. She used her Iranian passport to get into Syria but when she was found out to also be American, Syria sent her back to Iran
  • SMILE JUNKIE
I don't know what's happened to her since, though
  • Fʎrefly
hahaha the government says it didnt cut it. bullshit.
  • SMILE JUNKIE
last I knew, she was still in Iran and America was working to get her back
  • SMILE JUNKIE
so yeah. while watching a civil war unfold, keep in mind that both sides are fighting dirty. the government claims that armed rebels started the firefights during initial protests. rebels blame the government
  • SMILE JUNKIE
but still, a lot of the rebels are people who simply wanted their voices heard back during the Arab Spring
  • effef
this is such a nasty situation
  • SMILE JUNKIE
and people who have gotten caught in the middle of everything
  • SMILE JUNKIE
oh, where's that one blogger's thing I found once...
  • SMILE JUNKIE
there was a Syrian who was writing updates as he could of his own personal experiences
  • SMILE JUNKIE
I've been tracking the Syrian unrest and civil war since it started. soooo yeaaaah. I have feelings about this war '-'
  • /人◕ ‿‿ ◕人\
i remember one blog got abruptly cut off after the blogger said he'd been attacked and beaten by police or something...... (unsure)
  • SMILE JUNKIE
not surprising. but the government has been taking the fight to residential areas
  • SMILE JUNKIE
not only that, but those people who are at the border towns near Turkey can't get to Turkey and the government has done things like surround the towns
  • SMILE JUNKIE
massacres have been reported in a number of cities. men, women, and children.
  • SMILE JUNKIE
I can go through my timeline and pull up all the reports I've linked if anyone wants or needs
  • SMILE JUNKIE
especially if the government wins this one
  • Zefiris
what I consider scary is how many massacres in syria were documented by foreign reporters. And thats with a situation where its very hard to be involved at all for a foreigner.
  • Zefiris
stuff in the dark is likely way higher and worse. :S
  • SMILE JUNKIE
yes. and this is also not getting into how the UN has sent in monitors twice and once they were almost hit by a missile
  • SMILE JUNKIE
or how the rebels captured 14 Iranians claiming to be on a pilgrimage (Iran is an ally of the Syrian government)
  • SMILE JUNKIE
or how the rebels claimed they forced a Russian plane to land and found it full of arsenal (Russia also supports the Syrian government)
  • Fʎrefly
thats the thing more than anything else the blackout is hitting the foreigners. no third party reporting at all.
  • SMILE JUNKIE
part of the reason the UN has been deadlocked in doing ANYTHING regarding Syria is because China and Russia keep vetoing everything
  • SMILE JUNKIE
and that's not getting into how Turkey is getting restless and has had two of their planes shot down by Syria
  • effef
turkey is itching to do something, but they can't because they already have a thing with the kurds going on
  • SMILE JUNKIE
and of course, Syrians are fleeing to Jordan and Lebanon as well.
  • SMILE JUNKIE
yes, Turkey thinks if they do anything, the Kurds will take advantage and start something as well...
  • SMILE JUNKIE
but because Syrians are fleeing by the thousands to Jordan and Lebanon, that's putting Palestinians in a restless state which is also putting Israelis in a restless state
  • goth xena
well maybe turkey should stop treating the kurds like they do and that fear will be diminished (gpokerface)
  • goth xena
    /deadeye stare at all this
  • effef
    well yeah
  • SMILE JUNKIE
if that gives you any idea of what a powder keg this is, considering how Israel's now shooting at Gaza
  • effef
basically the middle east is a giant mess
  • muse ☤
wait, did the cease-fire end for Israel and Gaza?
  • D O G C R O C
yeah it just started from worst to terrible the moment turkey went against syria
  • D O G C R O C
as turkey was one of syria's allies, if i recall right
  • SMILE JUNKIE
hootlord: uh, no. this was recently? idk. I know I read that Israel shot up a residential area...
  • effef
cease fire is sort of relative at this point anyway
  • SMILE JUNKIE
devimelete: yes, Turkey actually had a good thing going with Syria but then its government started killing its citizens
  • SMILE JUNKIE
and Turkey went, "... well fuck that man."
  • SMILE JUNKIE
especially since Syrians are primarily fleeing to Turkey because most of the heavy fighting is in the northwest
  • SMILE JUNKIE
so Turkey's getting a lot of the brunt of it
  • D O G C R O C
last i heard the ceasefire is still in effect
  • effef
a "cease fire" between israel and the palestinians at this point is basically just them saying ok we will stop shooting but both of us are going to have guns at each others head with out finger on the trigger"
  • D O G C R O C
but with the protests in Egypt going on, it might change
  • Zefiris
Extremely. We (Germany) might actually have soldiers in turkey soon due to this, since some aid was requested - that says a lot. Turkey in particular isn't exactly famous for asking for help lightly.
  • Zefiris
The situation really is a mess. And now this blackout is just spelling possible endgame attempt by Assad et company :S Wish the people there the best, I really do.
  • Zefiris
maybe it's just a bad accident. it could happen. Somehow >_<
  • Fʎrefly
bad accident or rebel action would see more spotty outages I think. This is full scale metaphorical plug was pulled.
  • Zefiris
Yeah, you're right. All but sattelite phones cut really can't be an accident, I was just being hopeful x.x
  • Yuff ☼ 카렌
yeah I've never heard of an accident knocking out an entire country's internet before
  • azura
oh god, that's...worrying. syria, hang in there.
  • Dori-mingu
My dad ancestry is from Syria. Man, if they got ahold of that during that whole National Anthem thing....
  • pocahontas
Oh God that is so terrifying.
  • Dori-mingu
Rachel Maddow just had something about this on her show. Apparently the US had already supplied the country with communication kits so they can circumvent if the government shut it off on them like this.
  • SHSL HERO
...oh holy hamsterball the middle east is exploding
  • Slevin
    ..Horrifying
  • Slevin
    Sketch as hell.
