    Welcome to Plurkshop 16, StumbleUpon.
  • LChamp says
    i'll be lurking
  • Te-ge says
CookingUpA It's a workshop held on Plurk. Everyone can jump in and ask/answer questions.
  • denise205 says
I'm denise205 there too, but I never got into it beyond browsing...would love to learn more to enjoy it
  • horribilis says
    I'm ursus13 on SU.
  • Te-ge says
tonight I recommend that you request to be friends instead of only subscribing to people's pages. Friend requests get e-mailed on SU
  • Te-ge says
otherwise if you get more than 10 subscribers before you check it, you won't see everyone.
  • horribilis says
I don't really know what we're doing here.
  • nowsourcing says
indeed Teeg. SU used to have it where people could view your SU profile, and they'd zip right by you, only showing the most recent 10.
  • Te-ge says
horribilis Basically just having a discussion about StumbleUpon. You can ask any questions you have, and anyone else can answer.
  • horribilis says
Oh, okay. Thanks for getting me up to speed.
  • calcrz asks
is the plurkshop here? or somewhere else, different link?
  • Te-ge says
nowsourcing I missed a visiting a lot of new followers because of that. Especially if you're gone for a few days.
  • Te-ge says
sleepy This is the Plurkshop. :-) The more people who come to it, the busier it gets.
  • denise205 asks
so what are good tips for newbies on SU?
  • LChamp says
what is the benefit of the SU community?
  • nowsourcing says
right Teeg. I've had people get mad at me not friending them in the old days simply because I missed them for not logging in every day.
  • Te-ge says
this one might be a little slower than usual, we haven't had a Plurkshop for a few months, but are trying to restart them. :-)
  • Connie
I've had an SU account for a couple of years but never knew what to do with it.
  • calcrz
So, have they changed the recent visitors? I thought that's the way it has been the entire time?
  • Te-ge says
LChamp The benefit of stumbling or the benefit of the community as a social gathering?
  • nowsourcing says
denise205 an important tip for SU newbies is, much the same as other social sites, not be too self-promotional. SU will consider it bad!
  • Keli
what are the basic differences between su and digg?
  • nowsourcing says
denise205 be sure to have a variety of stumbles, to your interests of course.
  • LChamp says
    yes, teeg
  • Te-ge says
sleepy the 10 limit has always been that way, but they've added "friends" as opposed to just having to follow each other.
  • denise205 says
that makes sense, nowsourcing. I haven't gone beyond the browsing stage at SU, though.
  • calcrz
    Oh ok, I see.
  • Te-ge says
It's a good addition, but a little confusing. Now when you follow someone it means you want to see their stumbles, pure and simple.
  • calcrz
So sort-of like if you want to follow someone on plurk, you get their timeline.
  • Te-ge says
and by requesting friendship, it means you know the person. BUT a friend request sends you an e-mail to let you know about it.
  • nowsourcing says
keli great question. StumbleUpon is more like a discovery engine, like channel surfing on TV. Digg is more of the crowd effect.
  • Te-ge says
Marci If I follow you, I get to see your stumbles. In a bit I'll talk about the Recent Reviews page which will explain it better. :-)
  • nowsourcing says
keli although Digg now has something called the recommendation engine, that's supposed to look at your digg preferences and recommend for u
  • Te-ge says
Marci but if I just add you as a friend, I won't see your stumbles, it just shows we know each other.
  • ethnicomm
Teeg so how do I see my friend's stumbles?
  • sonnygill
Just got here folks. Catching up.
  • Keli
    ty :-)
  • Te-ge says
LChamp Let's say you want to get the word out about your animal work. SU is a perfect platform for that.
  • nowsourcing says
sleepy marci SU is much like the Plurk timeline. Also, if you hit the stumble button, you see friend recommendations based on your prefs.
  • Te-ge says
    Hi Sonny! :-)
  • Te-ge is
glad to see more people coming in. Hi ethnicomm! :-)
  • nowsourcing says
howdy y'all. come on in, the water's fine :-)
  • Te-ge says
Lchamp When a page first gets discovered, it is thumbed up and put into the system, possibly with a review added.
  • Te-ge
It's important to make sure that your pages are listed under the proper topics, or you won't get the right traffic and people won't stay.
  • LChamp says
so, if 'my page' is the not-for-profit where I volunteer, it would promote their programs?
  • Te-ge says
If your page is tagged right though, the people who stumbleupon the link by pressing the stumble button will only be people...
  • Te-ge
who are interested in that topic.
  • Te-ge says
LChamp Your page is any page you find interesting enough to stumble, but yes, you can use it to promote their programs.
  • nowsourcing says
gassho if you're into analytics, I've found that SU traffic has one of the lowest bounce rates among the large social media sites.
  • Te-ge says
Also, if you include a review of the page, you make sure that your review shows up on all of your friends SU pages.
  • Te-ge says
The Recent Review page is one of my favorite changes SU has made over the past couple years.
  • Te-ge says
Let's say I thumb up and review your nonprofit page. Because I add a review, my review goes out to everyone who is following me...
  • Te-ge says
and they can click on my review on their page to check the site out. IF they like the site as well and want to write a review,
  • nowsourcing says
gassho I mean that SU readers don't leave right away and stay on more pages typically than Digg, Reddit, etc
  • Te-ge says
That review goes out to all **their** followers.
  • sonnygill
Hi teeg & ethnicomm :-) When you get to it Teeg - I think getting into the many features of the toolbar would be great.
  • Te-ge says
If it's a really popular post, it will be passed on from follower to follower, each one sharing it with other friends.
  • Te-ge says
gassho That is one of the big reasons you want to make sure that your stumbles are listed in the right category.
  • Te-ge says
When you get people who are interested in that subject, then they're going to stay longer.
  • sonnygill
Teeg - that's awesome, thank you. Are there certain features than others that we should be aware of or that will help our SU experience?
  • nowsourcing says
gassho Teeg yes, the better distribution and fitting categories, the better...though sometimes you'll have some trolls out to make trouble
  • KaraSwims says
agrees-I stay on a page much longer than for digg, reddit, or the others. They seem better selected on SU.
  • KaraSwims says
on the other hand though-I've never experienced the community feel of SU. Maybe I will if I get friends!
  • Te-ge says
sonny I have my toolbar set up with the tools I use the most, and the default is different, is why I recommend the ebook instead.
  • sonnygill
Gotcha. Well I had no idea you could customize it :-) And I'll add to that SU visitors definitely have a lower bounce rate than other sites.
  • nowsourcing says
same here, Teeg. One thing I like to add to the default toolbar is the text search, so I can stumble specifics :-)
  • Te-ge says
nowsourcing If I remember right, the email icon isn't on the default toolbar either, and I love knowing when I have a message.
  • Te-ge says
sonnygill Toolbar options lets you set up your toolbar pretty much the way you want, including adding it beside another toolbar.
  • nowsourcing says
Teeg I forget if that is default or not. And yes, email icon is a must have!
  • sonnygill
Ah ok - see that's the problem I have. I haven't grown into leaving the toolbar there instead of hiding it. Need to work on that :-)
  • Te-ge says
nowsourcing I also like the "Tag this page" option. Makes it easy to add my own tags.
  • Te-ge says
Connie By the way, tags on SU work similar to how they do on delicious.
  • ethnicomm
Ok I'm showing the toolbar now!
  • Te-ge says
Create your own tags for a page and find the page again by looking through those tags.
  • nowsourcing says
ethnicomm I don't think I could surf the net anymore without the toolbar (LOL)
  • nowsourcing says
there is also something to be said for a good looking SU blog, meaning the pages that you review, not just the ones you like.
  • BarbaraKB says
Hey Teeg. Popping in for second while helping son *write story* on computer: homework!
  • Te-ge says
nowsourcing I'm the same way. I've tried it when I get a new computer or try a different browser, but I'm miserable without it.
  • Te-ge says
gassho Community is something I'm hoping will really come back with the new community manager at SU.
  • Te-ge says
I consider all my friends on there real friends, but as SU grew, they lost a lot of the sense of community that was there before.
  • BarbaraKB
nowsourcing Yo! I like SU 'cuz it's so visual: often better than a text title & tags. Fun for photos & art & videos :-)
  • Te-ge
a site like Plurk makes a great combination with SU to me. I can meet people here and get to know them, then add them as a friend there.
  • nowsourcing says
SU also has some interesting tidbits on their blog, though it hasn't been updated in a while.
  • Te-ge says
sonnygill I think once you get the toolbar set up where it's useful to you, it'll be easier to leave there.
  • Te-ge says
especially if you already leave Google's toolbar up all the time, put them both together and no extra space taken. :-)
  • LChamp says
how many tracking cookies will SU place on my computer...I clean those off every day, but they are very annoying
  • Te-ge says
BarbaraKB One of the first things I remember about SU is visiting some beautiful photoblogs.
  • BarbaraKB asks
Teeg can u tell if a "friend" is thumbing *down* your discoveries? clarify the troll elements @ SU. confuses me.
  • sonnygill
I think so too Teeg. I'll be reading your tutorial and setting it up to my liking.
  • Te-ge says
LChamp It used to be one, but may have increased. If you use the toolbarless SU, there shouldn't be any.
  • Te-ge says
BarbaraKB Good question. You can't tell a friend has thumbed down a page unless they review it.
  • Te-ge says
A thumb down tells SU that you don't want that type of page, so just getting that without a negative review isn't too bad.
  • Te-ge says
Where it gets bad are when you get people trolling for certain types of sites to write negative reviews about.
  • Te-ge says
SU has been more active lately about trying to get rid of trolls, I know some of the bad ones are gone. I had a post that was trolled
  • Te-ge
and the reviews have disappeared from them.
  • Te-ge says
Social Media, marketing, SEO, etc. were all topics that were apt to get trolled at one time.
  • BarbaraKB
just to clarify: thumb down means "I don't wanna see more like this" rather than "this is an awful site" & review means others read reason
  • MikeonTV asks
Stumble upon is a dandy website created by Canadians!woot!
  • Te-ge says
BarbaraKB Yep. And a thumb up means I really like this and want to see more like it. :-)
  • Te-ge says
BarbaraKB The neat thing though is that each time someone thumbs up a page, it goes out to even more people using the stumblebutton.
  • LChamp says
can you 'vote' more than once with the thumbs?
  • Te-ge says
BarbaraKB Good reminder. On SU, It's okay to submit your blog once, but submitting too many things from the same site means
  • Te-ge
that your stumbles of that site lose their potency. I think we figured out once stumbling the same site once every 25 or so times is good.
  • Te-ge says
You're welcome Sonny! Thanks for coming! :-)
  • Te-ge says
aivzdog it does indeed. I think SU also shares it less after you've stumbled any site a couple times.
  • Te-ge says
One last thing. Trading stumbles on SU is against their TOS.
  • LChamp says
    can they enforce that?
  • Te-ge says
You can ask someone to look at a page and give it a stumble if they like it, but specifically requesting stumbles is frowned on.
  • ethnicomm
so you don't get the Digg-nation thing happening where 20 people control the top page?
  • Te-ge says
LChamp Right now they mostly do with sites that are designed to trade stumbles, but they can ban your account.
  • MikeonTV asks
hasn't it been a while since a plurkshop?
  • Te-ge says
nowsourcing They walk a thin line. :-) The send to is to share interests with your friends, not ask for stumbles I think.
  • Te-ge says
Mike It has, we're just getting them started again. :-)
  • ethnicomm
    BrilliantJeni alway sends me pages
  • Te-ge says
nowsourcing Give me a second and I'll find the link to the TOS section. :-)
  • nowsourcing says
Teeg good clarification. The more evil sites out there just have random people stumbling ya. Use em & prepare to be banned, ur site too:-(
  • Te-ge loves
when friends send her pages they think she'll like, but the ones that just send me messages asking for stumbles are frustrating.
  • Keli
just a check to make sure I am getting the point of SU...I can use it like digg, to share content with colleagues etc who are part of my SU
  • Keli
community, and...it can also be used to generate more traffic to my site(s) and sites I like and want to help?
  • Te-ge says
Keli There is more to SU though. For example, if you're interested in a specific subject, you can find sites specific to it.
  • ethnicomm
Keli there must be an indian food site LOL
  • Te-ge says
I almost never use the plain stumble button anymore, but if I'm researching a specific subject, I will use the search button
  • Te-ge
and stumble pages just within that subject.
  • Keli
hmm, so funny I said it twice...
  • Te-ge says
Keli I just used the search feature and the stumble button and found 10 indian food sites, and I'm sure there are more. :-)
  • Keli
    (LOL)
  • AllanCockerill
just arrived - hi everyone - a lot of good stuff here Teeg :-)
  • Te-ge wonders
if anyone has a question that hasn't been answered yet?
  • Te-ge says
    Hi Allan! Thanks! :-)
  • CookingUpAStory says
Teeg had to go/come back. Are these Pshops random, or at set time? I've enjoyed reading the thread! Learned some stuff too :-)
  • Keli
well, as you can see from my info I have been there since July. Now I see I have to actually (learn and) use it to garner value ;-)
  • Te-ge says
aivzdog No problem, it's always nice to meet someone else who loves SU. :-)
  • LChamp says
i just downloaded the toolbar and it wants to close all my windows...later on that
  • ethnicomm
Teeg where do you spend the most of your online time to dev. your biz? and why there?
  • Te-ge says
ethnicomm You're very welcome. I fell in love with SU the first time I tried it, and love sharing about it. :-)
  • Te-ge says
ethnicomm Right now I'm on Plurk, SU, and SL the most. I don't think there's one social media site that has everything yet.
  • Te-ge says
StumbleUpon is definitely in my top 3. Partly because I like SU users (traffic) more than Digg or sites like that.
  • ethnicomm is
there a life cycle thing? start off on SU, then Plurk then SL for example? or is it a multi-pronged approach?
  • LChamp says
for me, it was twitter, plurk, and now SU
  • Te-ge says
I have about a 30% bounce rate with Google visitors, much higher with other sites.
  • Te-ge says
ethnicomm That's the order I started with the sites, but these are the three that I still use repeatedly, so no life cycle so far.
  • Te-ge says
LChamp I left off twitter just because I haven't really gotten back to using it full time since all their problems this summer.
  • ethnicomm
I think I will look into SU more now that you've shed some light on it's utility. Thanks again Teeg
  • Te-ge says
You're welcome. :-) If I can help more or answer any questions just let me know.
  • LChamp says
    yeah, since I started plurking, I have plurked/responded about 13,000 times...twittered 27 times
  • Te-ge
my blog was originally created to write about SU, but I realized I enjoyed learning about all the social media sites out there, so expanded.
  • Te-ge says
LChamp I love the conversational abilities of Plurk. There would be no way to do something like this on Twitter.
  • Te-ge says
aivzdog I sent you a friend request here on Plurk. Do you use the same name on SU too? (I'm Teeg on both.)
  • Keli
must sign off now, but once more thanks for the inspiration to you and all the fellow helpful plurkers (bye)
  • Te-ge says
aivzdog LOL I recognize your SU picture. I'd thumbed up your page before. :-)
  • Te-ge says
Keli You're welcome! Glad you enjoyed it. :-)
  • DebInAustin
I am sorry I missed it! I am feeling sick, so am going to go to bed. I look forward to reading through this tomorrow!
  • Te-ge hopes
you feel better soon Deb. Let me know if you have any questions after reading it. (cozy)
  • Te-ge will
be back in a bit, but needs to get her little one back to bed first. :-)
  • MackCollier says
sonnuva buck I forgot ALL about this! Dammit!
  • Te-ge says
Mack Let me know if there are any questions you have that we missed and I'll try to cover them in the review. :-)
  • AllanCockerill has
to run, thanks for the info Teeg, see you later everyone
  • Te-ge says
aivzdog Thanks! I enjoy helping. :-)
  • Te-ge says
aivzdog It was great meeting you tonight! Glad you could make it. :-)
  • CookingUpAStory says
Teeg Is there a way to read this thread on a stand-alone page? Thx for doing this, couldn't stay last night!
  • Te-ge says
CookingUpAStory If you click on "Plurk Page at the bottom right hand corner of this thread, it will open up a new page with just this
  • Te-ge says
    You're welcome! :-)
  • PZM is
reading the plurkshop on StumbleUpon thanks to Teeg.
  • WebBetty  says
I'd like to follow this, but I'm already lost. Maybe I'll plurk this page for later. :-)
