Sorry Jason :-(. Those are the Mac's I'm accustomed to dealing with. Call back, and they will overnight you one if you complain.
  • raygun01 says
Is this a common issue allen099?
  • bigepaz says
    oh no! mac Fail!
  • Phillip says
I wish I had a Mac Pro. But I'm happy with my Aluminum iMac :-)
  • raygun01 says
bigepaz is you Mac Pro pretty quiet typically? This thing was like CRAZY loud.
  • RogueTess says
nooooooo!!!!! Can you kick the tires?
  • allen099 says
it's not a common issue on this one. It was on the PMG5 with liquid cooling. Do you know where it's coming from?
  • allen099 says
take your HDD's out, and start it up. also unhook your AP/BT card
  • allen099 says
oh, and it will be loud until you put the plastic cover on
  • raygun01 says
I'll take those drives out... no ap/bt cards so that's no issue.
  • allen099 says
ok, np. i'll be around in the Plurk neigborhood here waiting for the suspense
  • allen099 says
you may be experiencing a PSU failure btw..(i know you dont need me to tell you that :-) )
  • Rafa
I had insomnia, so I'm gonna wait to see what happens as well. :-P
  • bigepaz says
my Mac Pro is pretty crazy quiet.
  • raygun01 says
removing all extra drives works... Question: Since there's no "cable" is cable select wrong for the drives?
  • raygun01 says
    (oh and thank you!!!!)
  • allen099 says
there is no cable, but the connections are like PC MLB's...the controllers are on the board
  • allen099 says
so, no burning smell without drives? smell each drive near the SATA connection...also sniff near the PSU on the bottom..
  • ktreb thinks
"sniff near the PSU on the bottom" is kind of funny. I know...it's juvenille.
  • Rafa
I know this is a terrible thing to happen with a brand new machine, but I laughed @ "sniff near the PSU" :-D
  • ktreb
    Sorry.
  • allen099 says
i figured it would get some smiles :-). just trying to help raygun01's karma ;-)
  • raygun01 says
no burning smell at all without the drives...
  • raygun01 says
    (now pull the PSU's finger)
  • allen099 says
ok, keep the machine on for a few mins, keep the plastic on (w/o aluminum door)
  • Rafa
you're the joker trying to help the dark knight, allen099 :-P
  • raygun01 says
No burning smell near the bottom either.
  • allen099 says
it may be thermal paste between processors and MLB...i have witnessed that on new machines, rarely though
  • raygun01 says
Could an improperly pin'd drive been the cause? In other words, if the drives were set to Cable Select and they shouldn't be..
  • raygun01 says
    could that be a cause?
  • allen099 says
nope, that shouldn't cause it because the SMC (sys mgmt controller) is very good..smart about that
  • raygun01 says
(doesn't seem like it could, but I'm not positive either)
  • raygun01 says
    hmmm then that's bizarre.
  • raygun01 says
Looks like it reset when I unplugged it to remove the drives. I'll do it again to be safe.
  • raygun01 says
Quick question: With 3 other drives, what mode do u recommend I put them in? M/S/CS/nothing?
  • raygun01 says
I *thought* CS made the most sense, but then we see what happened!
  • allen099 says
you can do nothing..and it will self-assign depending on the slot they're in
  • allen099 says
and no worries about the questions. keep pelting me with 'em. this is what i love to do :-)
  • raygun01 says
Seriously, thanks for helping me! Completely appreciated. In your opinion, is the whole "burning" thing just a fluke?
  • raygun01 says
No big deal at this time? I guess if it becomes a big deal, its covred under warranty.
  • allen099 says
did you put all the drives back in, and no more burning?
  • allen099 says
and you have 14 days to return for a brand new one (sometimes they give you longer)...otherwise 1 yr warranty
  • allen099 says
I will be your resident genius if you'd like :-P
  • RogueTess is
happy to hear the new toy is running quietly. I can now go to sleep without anxiety. ;-)
  • raygun01 says
All drives in - fan noise issue again at which point I shut it down quickly to avoid said burning.
  • raygun01 says
I'll now try each drive alone to see if maybe it's one drive that causing it.
  • allen099 says
alright. put one drive in at a time...
  • allen099 says
once you've figured out which drive it is, just put that one drive alone into the first SATA slot..see if it happens again
  • allen099 says
if it doesnt happen, but a new drive into the same SATA slot where the first drive was that started the fans/burn
  • allen099 says
lol you got it from here. i dont need to say a word :-)
  • raygun01 says
So I'm not sure if you've heard me dog on Seagate about a drive issue with them over the past 80 mos...
  • raygun01 says
Long story short, new drive failed, replacement failed, replacement failed...
  • raygun01 says
they sent me a drive now 3 times larger than the one I bought b/c of my issues. It worked in my old machine.
  • raygun01 says
Guess which drive is causing the weirdness? The replacement of a replacement of a replacement of a failed drive. wow.
  • allen099 says
yes, I have to be honest and tell you that SeaGate and LaCie have the highest failure rates in the industry
  • allen099 says
sorry to hear about the problem...hopefully you have a backup. Random question, but does that drive work ok in the G4?
  • raygun01 says
All other drives work together fine... plug that one drive in, no startup chime, fan turns on, you know the rest.
  • raygun01 says
oh and by 80 mos I meant 8
  • allen099 says
yeah 80 months might be a long time for a manufacturer to duke it out with you
  • raygun01 says
yes works fine in the G4, tho I only got it a few weeks ago so I wasnt using it for anything b/c of new computer coming soon.
  • allen099 says
cool, well looks like issue resolved :-)
  • allen099 says
enjoy the Mac Pro! Octo-Core to the rescue.
  • raygun01 says
I think I figured it out!
  • ktreb
Wow, Plurk...bringing people with tech issues together...
  • raygun01 says
    hahaha totally.
  • raygun01 says
So I think when I inserted the drive into the mac pro slot, a few of the pins bent slightly and are touching another pin.
  • raygun01 says
Crossing fingers as I'm about to power up to see...
  • allen099 says
    awesome. got a flathead screwdriver?
  • raygun01 says
    Success! Problem solved.
  • raygun01 says
phew! Thanks for everything allen099!! (g_drinking) Have a shot on me!
  • raygun01 says
I just wish I knew exactly how those pins bent... very bizarre. i was being overly cautious with those things.
  • raygun01 says
although none of the drives are mounted. I swear... I know just enough to get myself in trouble.
  • allen099 says
lol well good job detective :-). yeah can't really bend them on the way into the Mac Pro..it slides right in. Ahh well. Crisis averted.
  • stkxppro says
    oh......that stinks
  • Khaled
so is it called a Lemon ? HA
