Chestnut Botgirl makes a strong statement. What do you think? botgirl.blogspot.com/2009/12/virtual-property-rights-manifesto.html

Ahuva says that is indeed a very powerful post. quite honestly, i will need to think on it. i think there are some nuances that weren't covered
Chestnut I have not responded because I need to think about it as well. I have not seen that position articulated so clearly elsewhere.
Chestnut Botgirl always makes me think hard about things. I look forward to the comments the post is sure to generate Kudos Botgirl, if you see this
Ahuva says oh yes, no question that she is one of the pre-eminent bloggers. always makes me think. the comments will be very interesting.
botgirl says thanks, chestnut. I'm sure there are loads of aspects I either missed, in addition to those I left out to focus on the key points.
botgirl says Thanks, ahuva, I'm also very curious as to the comments and discussion.
Ahuva asks do you think that the prices charged for content would have been substantially different had the creators realized there was another world?
Ahuva asks or do you think that the price charged has no correlation. if you never need to buy it again, perhaps they would have charged more?
Chestnut good question. What happens to the "freebie" marketplace?
Chestnut I can' t help but laugh - AnnOToole says Botgirl is killing SL in her comment on the post. ITS ALL YOUR FAULT BG and your little dog too
botgirl says in a quick look, there are over a quarter of a million items listed in xstreet. Is the problem not enough content, or too much?
botgirl says Would anyone really care if there were no new digital shoes created in 2010?
Chestnut Oh I think many fashionistas would be upset
botgirl shares The Shoes of Imelda Marcos
Chestnut mmmhum...exactly
-ls/cm says after losing a lot of expensive dances in a HUDDLES, yeah, a backup would be nice.
Ahuva says thank you for this word, new to me: Poshlost is something preposterously overdone but without self-knowledge or irony.
Feline says I think there are 3 separate issues floating around here. Backups of your items. Porting to other grids. And selling stuff you didn't make.
Ahuva says maybe the problem is that the content is not properly valued, not that there is too much or too little. i dont KNOW, it's NOT so simple.
Ahuva says good points, felineslade. distinct issues.
Feline says Unfortunately, any conversation on this topic ends up muddling them when they're separate issues.
Feline says IMO, backups, very good! Porting to other grids, not what you paid for, need license clarification. Reselling, bad.
Feline says Not fair automatically accusing people who want to back up of wanting IP free-for-all, though.
Honour says lol felineslade said pretty much what I was trying to - but my comment took much longer. :-)
Chestnut Feline I think you are spot on
botgirl says I agree felineslade that dividing the specific issues is a must for productive conversation.
botgirl says But there is also the overall question that spans both back-up and use on other grids.
botgirl says as I see it, using a digital asset on two grids is no different than listening to an mp3 file on a laptop and a portable music device.
Feline says Not fair automatically accusing people who want to back up of wanting IP free-for-all, though.
Feline wonders why I double post like that sometimes. Embarrassing!
Ahuva says i think i agree on that botgirl - use on two grids. but i think that gets back to the orig terms of purchase. would they have been diff?
Feline says But if the asset isn't licensed for two grids, it's like buying one license of Photoshop and putting it on two PCs. That's the difference.
Feline says Creators need to be able to indicate grid portability on assets. Until then, we don't know what license we pruchase.
botgirl says With your Photoshop analogy, I guess it depends on whether the goods are used only on one grid at a time.. Also if I have copy rights....
botgirl says I think that there's no substantive reason a seller could restrict where a purchaser uses their purchases.
Ahuva says comments are already coming in on the blog. :-) i see some good analogies there. i wish we could merge these threads.
botgirl says For instance, if I want to install a copy of MIcrosoft Word on a Mac platform using parallels, for instance.
